Music History

1920s β€” Present

Jazz

Jazz emerged from the rich musical culture of New Orleans in the early twentieth century, blending African rhythms, blues, ragtime, and European harmonic structures into something entirely new β€” America's first truly original art form.

The 1940s bebop revolution transformed jazz into high art. Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie demanded extraordinary virtuosity and harmonic sophistication. Miles Davis bridged every era β€” cool jazz, hard bop, modal, and fusion β€” releasing landmark records that permanently shifted the genre.

John Coltrane pushed the spiritual and harmonic dimensions to their limits. Today, from Herbie Hancock to Robert Glasper, jazz remains a living, endlessly evolving form.

Pop

Pop music crystallized from the rock and roll explosion of the 1950s into a genre defined by accessibility, melody, and mass appeal. The Beatles detonated it globally β€” no form of popular music was left unchanged by their arrival.

Motown's polished soul, Phil Spector's Wall of Sound, and disco's hedonistic pulse each defined their decade. Michael Jackson's Thriller became the best-selling album in history, redefining what popular music could be.

The vinyl revival has brought classic pop pressings back to prominence. Original copies of Rumours, Thriller, and Purple Rain rank among the most sought-after records in any serious collection.

Metal

Heavy metal was born in 1968 Birmingham. Black Sabbath's down-tuned riffs and Ozzy Osbourne's haunting vocals created a new sonic universe built on darkness, power, and maximum volume.

The New Wave of British Heavy Metal β€” Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, MotΓΆrhead β€” codified the genre's aesthetic. Thrash metal's ferocious precision in the 1980s produced some of the most technically demanding music ever committed to vinyl.

Metallica's Black Album proved metal's extraordinary global reach. Today metal has vital scenes on every continent, all faithfully documented on vinyl.

Indie Rock

Indie rock emerged from the post-punk scenes of the early 1980s, defined not just by sound but by a fundamental ethos β€” music made and released independently of major label control.

The 1990s were indie rock's golden age. Nirvana's mainstream crossover proved alternative sensibilities could reach massive audiences. Pavement and Sonic Youth defined the underground.

Vinyl remains the format of choice for indie fans β€” pressing runs are limited, artwork is treasured, and the physical object carries meaning that digital streams cannot replicate.
